Concerned about SIBO? Consider SIBO Triple Gas Breath Test

The GI-MAP can identify dysbiosis patterns associated with SIBO, but a dedicated breath test is required for a direct SIBO diagnosis. The two tests can be run together.

The GI-MAP requires a single stool sample collected at home. It can be completed on any day of your cycle, provided you follow the preparation instructions below.

Medications — please read before testing

Never stop prescription medication without consulting your healthcare provider first.

Before collecting your sample, wait:

  • 14 days after antibiotics, antiparasitics, antifungals, bismuth, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and probiotic supplements
  • 4–6 weeks after immune suppressants or oral steroids
  • 4 weeks after a colonoscopy or barium enema
Stop 3 days before collecting
  • Lactoferrin supplements
  • Aspirin or other NSAIDs
  • Digestive enzymes
  • Antacids
  • Iron supplements or more than 250mg vitamin C daily
  • Activated charcoal, bentonite clay, betaine HCl
  • Laxatives, enemas, suppositories or mineral oil

Menstruating or actively bleeding from haemorrhoids.

Probiotics

Probiotic supplements can influence microbiome results. If you want to assess your baseline microbiome without supplementation, stop probiotics for 2 weeks before testing. If you want to evaluate the effect of your current probiotic, continue taking it.

Posting your sample

Whenever possible, collect your sample on a Sunday or Monday so it reaches the laboratory promptly. Ship within 24 hours of collection using the prepaid return label included with your kit. Follow the enclosed instructions to arrange collection.

The GI-MAP is suitable for people with persistent digestive symptoms, suspected gut dysbiosis or those looking for a comprehensive assessment of digestive function, the gut microbiome, immune activity and intestinal inflammation. Results should always be interpreted alongside symptoms, medical history and other clinical findings.

If SIBO or intestinal methanogen overgrowth (IMO) is your primary concern, a dedicated SIBO Triple Gas Breath Test is recommended. The GI-MAP and SIBO Breath Test answer different clinical questions and are often complementary.

Yes — the GI-MAP requires a single stool sample and there is no cycle-dependent timing. Ideally collect on a Sunday or Monday so your sample reaches the lab promptly. The sample must be shipped within 24 hours of collection.

Results are typically available within approximately 21 working days from the laboratory receiving your sample. Transit time to the USA is additional. Once your results are available, I’ll email them to you promptly.

The GI-MAP is the core test — a comprehensive stool microbiome analysis covering pathogens, bacteria, parasites, fungi, viruses and intestinal health markers.

Zonulin is a marker associated with intestinal permeability and may provide additional information when impaired gut barrier function is suspected.

StoolOMX adds bile acid metabolism and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) analysis — particularly relevant for bloating, fat digestion difficulties, diarrhoea or gut motility concerns.

Both add-ons can be selected together for the most comprehensive assessment.

Never stop prescription medications without speaking to your doctor first. Please check the Before You Test tab for a full list of what to pause and for how long. In general, antibiotics and antifungals should be stopped at least 14 days before testing, and probiotics for at least 2 weeks if you want to assess your baseline microbiome.

Yes — the GI-MAP tests for H. pylori and its eight virulence factors. The virulence factor data provides information about the genetic potential of the specific strain to cause pathology, which can help guide treatment decisions.

The GI-MAP evaluates the gut microbiome but cannot diagnose small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). If SIBO or intestinal methanogen overgrowth (IMO) is suspected, a dedicated SIBO Breath Test is recommended. The two tests are often complementary and may be used together when clinically appropriate.
