What this test measures
Hydrogen and methane gases in exhaled breath, measured over a timed 3-hour collection to assess small intestinal fermentation patterns.
- Measures hydrogen and methane gases in exhaled breath following ingestion of glucose or lactulose.
- Elevated hydrogen may be associated with hydrogen-dominant SIBO.
- Elevated methane may be associated with intestinal methanogen overgrowth (IMO).
- Glucose is rapidly absorbed, while lactulose passes through the entire small intestine before reaching the colon.
- Breath samples are collected at home over 3 hours following a 12-hour fast.
The SIBO Breath Test measures hydrogen and methane fermentation patterns associated with suspected small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) or intestinal methanogen overgrowth (IMO). Results should always be interpreted alongside symptoms, medical history and other clinical findings to help guide further investigation and personalised treatment.
Glucose is rapidly absorbed in the upper small intestine and primarily reflects fermentation occurring in the proximal small bowel. Lactulose is not absorbed and passes through the entire small intestine before reaching the colon, allowing fermentation patterns to be assessed throughout its length.
Not sure which substrate is right for you? Contact me before ordering and I’ll recommend the most appropriate option based on your symptoms and clinical history.
The SIBO Breath Test evaluates hydrogen and methane fermentation patterns, while GI-MAP provides a comprehensive assessment of the gut microbiome, pathogens, digestive markers and intestinal inflammation. Together they offer a broader picture of gastrointestinal health.
The SIBO breath test measures two gases produced by bacterial fermentation in the small intestine, collected at timed intervals over 3 hours. Results should always be interpreted alongside symptoms, medical history and other clinical findings.
The SIBO breath test requires careful preparation beginning 2–4 weeks before your collection date. The collection itself takes 3 hours. Please read the instructions included with your kit carefully before you begin.
Check the collection instructions for your specific substrate for the full preparation protocol. Certain medications and supplements may need to be paused well in advance of testing.
Do not eat or drink anything except plain water for at least 12 hours before starting. Do not eat, smoke or sleep during the collection period itself.
Collect breath samples at timed intervals using the vacuum-sealed tubes provided. Timing is important — follow the instructions carefully throughout.
Return samples using the prepaid packaging provided. Post as soon as possible after completing collection.
The SIBO Breath Test measures hydrogen and methane fermentation patterns associated with suspected small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) or intestinal methanogen overgrowth (IMO). It assesses fermentation patterns rather than the gut microbiome itself. For a more comprehensive assessment of gastrointestinal health, consider combining it with the GI-MAP.
